Shyamala, a resilient Recycle Guardian from Chinna Veerampattinam in Puducherry, has long supported her family under difficult circumstances, caring for her elderly mother and younger brother while living in a small portion of a government building without a permanent home. Her husband’s prolonged struggle with alcoholism and the recent loss of her father further intensified her challenges. Determined to sustain her family, she collected recyclable waste from streets and nearby areas, carrying heavy loads on her head, which caused physical strain and limited her income. Recognising her situation, Hand in Hand India provided her with a tricycle for waste collection, transforming her livelihood. She can now transport larger volumes efficiently, reducing physical hardship and increasing her earnings. Beyond financial gains, the support restored her dignity and hope, enabling her to envision a more secure future for her family, which she describes as life-changing.
