From Uncertainty to Enterprise

Author:

Through the Coastal Circularity Project implemented by Hand in Hand India, Paruvatham and Saravanan from Medavakkam, Chennai, transformed their uncertain livelihoods into a sustainable business venture. Coming from poor and marginalised communities, they had long depended on informal waste collection with irregular earnings and limited opportunities for growth. Under the project, they received structured training in waste management, financial literacy, and business development, along with continuous mentoring and operational support. The provision of a tricycle improved their waste collection efficiency and enabled them to expand their activities confidently. Equipped with new skills and determination, they established Mahalakshmi Waste Paper Mart. Today, they independently manage their enterprise, earning a stable income while contributing to recycling and environmental sustainability. Their journey highlights resilience, dignity, and the power of opportunity in creating lasting social and economic change.
