In my time of need, it was Hand in Hand India that trusted me and my group and gave us the money to set up this enterprise. I have confidence that they will always help us. It’s only because of this business that our children are studying in engineering colleges!”
Four gleaming women, welcome us to their small and colourful workstation. We have come in the evening, just as they are wrapping up their order for the day. We wait for them to finish – quietly observing how they unpack a cone of thread, how they place them in the respective markings on the machine, how they set the digital timer, speed and number of rotations, how they place an adhesive in just the right amount and how the final thread tubes emerge – happy and colourful. The whole process takes roughly five minutes and they repeat it 500 times a day to assemble 1,500 thread tubes.
Jeeva, the owner of Praveen Thread Assembling Unit and the leader of the Maghizhum Poo Self Help Group sits down to speak to us about her business venture and its success. Hailing from Kanchipuram, weaving was in Jeeva and her colleagues (she employs 4 other women) blood! She was already in the weaving trade when she decided to buy the machinery to assemble thread to supply to tailors and manufacturers around Tamil Nadu. In 5 years, she has 8 machines and along with her team produces an output of close to 7,500 tubes of thread a day! Passionate about her trade, she is someone who cant think of doing anything else! She has liaisoned with agents from Cuddalore, Pondicherry, Vandavasi and Thiruvallur who regularly take orders from her. Running a thread-assembling unit goes beyond just making the thread tubes. Jeeva and her team in addition label, arrange, pack and cover the boxes such that they are ready for sale.
Ever since she joined the SHG, Hand in Hand India has been assisting her with loan facilities. As of May 2016, she has taken 8 loans and has applied for her 9th! The team currently procures a 100 colour cones, mostly colours that are feminine. They dream of expanding to an array of 4,000 colours that cater to both male and female clothing requirements.
Jeeva’s business is a success story. She earns INR 1,00,000 a month of which she makes a profit of INR 40,000 per month. Going forward, she wants to liaison directly with boutiques in Chennai, export thread tubes and expand her colour range! Afterall, as they are the only thread assembling unit in Kanchipuram, their dream is not far!
How has Hand in Hand India helped her we ask, “In my time of need, it was Hand in Hand India that trusted me and my group and gave us the money to set up this enterprise. I have confidence that they will always help us. It’s only because of this business that our children are studying in engineering colleges!”
