Exposure programme on financing SHGs

The RBI / CAB-NABARD* Collaborative Exposure Programme on Financing Self-Help Groups for Bankers was conducted in association with the Percy Barnevik Hand in Hand Academy for Social Entrepreneurship**at Kancheepuram from January 28-30, 2015. Thirty six senior bankers across India participated in the programme.

The main objective was to help participants learn more about the achievements of the SHG programme in India and study the various models of SHG formation and credit linkage.

The 3-day training programme consisted of a series of plenary sessions by distinguished speakers, interactive discussions, presentations and case studies. The participants also understood the key role played by banks/NGOs in the long term sustainability of the SHG Programme.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr V. Vasanthan, Chief General Manager of RBI, Chennai. The keynote address was delivered by Mr Venkateswara Rao, Chief General Manager of NABARD, Regional Office, Chennai. Mr Manas Ranjan Mohanty, GM, RBI-College of Agricultural Banking, Pune and Mr.SV Sardesai, DGM were the Programme Directors.

Dr. Kalpana Sankar shared her knowledge, insights, and experience on the SHG-Bank linkage programme and on the SHPI perspective. Dr. Jeyaseelan spoke on risk management in the SHG bank linkageprogramme and the need to identify the right NGO in order to promote SHGs. Mr. Dominic, Lead District Manager delivered lectures and moderated thepanel discussions. The training also addressed the operational challenges in the linkage programme andthe way forward.

The trainingprogrammewas a success with lessonsthat were derived and applied in the participant’s context and a good balance of field visits to various enterprises and dairy value chain developed by Hand in Hand that recapitulated the learning points.

*RBI’s College of Agricultural Banking (CAB) focusses on training activity for officers of Commercial Banks for a broader sphere of agricultural development banking and finance. National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) supports the capacity building initiatives on SHG Bank linkage programs.
