Twelve-year-old Yellammaal is now in Hand in Hand’s Bharathiar Residential Bridge Camp, after she left home in Nayakentpettai, Kancheepuram District. With two older brothers and her father (she lost her mother), she found the house turned into something of a menagerie when her father remarried and had a total of 22 children! Her father recycled milk sachets (polythene) while one of her brothers cut sugarcane. The other brother took care of the young ones at home. A mobiliser from Hand in Hand came and spoke to her father one day, and promised him that Yellammaal would have a bright future if only he would send her to school. To her eternal good fortune, her father agreed. Now here she is…and she loves studying, playing and eating at BRBC. She wants to become a police officer one day, so as to help protect children like her.
