Hand in Hand India conducted an exploratory visit in March and September 2010 to initiate the process of establishing itself in Sri Lanka. After discussions with various stakeholders, it was decided that Hand in Hand India will commence operations as a capacity building organisation and not as a Microfinance organisation as Sri Lanka is in the process of finalising its Microfinance Bill and a lot of changes are expected between now and the final version of the Bill.

Hand in Hand has been registered as Section 34 Company limited by Guarantee in Sri Lanka and registered as an NGO with the Voluntary Social Service Organisation (VSSO) under the Ministry of Defence.

Nuwara Eliya (Central Province), Gampaha (Western Province) and Vavuniya (Northern Province) are the three districts chosen, based on economic need, to commence Hand in Hand’s activities. Field operations will commence soon in Nuwara Eliya and Gampaha.

The focus will be on

• Group formation & Training in savings, internal lending and Enterprise creation
• Bridge schools for children
• Citizens' Centre
